Review of Woman in Gold (2015) by Marc B — 06 Apr 2015
The movie "Woman in Gold" is excellent from its unique opening scene to its ending. Movie critics must have seen a different film than we did. My thoughtful psychologist wife and I (lawyer, former USAR Special Forces, novelist, and dad) chatted about it long after leaving the theater -- which is a litmus test.
Helen Mirren and Ryan Reynolds at top of their game. Writing was witty. International legal dispute flowed without dragging. Potent flashbacks, settings and photography, and cello and orchestral interludes turned history into a compelling story.
Admittedly, it took me back decades to when my mother explained how Vienna and the "cultured" Viennese (including her friends) transformed the day the Nazis marched into the city. This movie about a woman trying to recover a painting of her aunt stolen from her family during WW II highlights American "exceptionalism" on multiple levels.
As an aside, I have no relation to the characters in the movie.
