Wolfen, a werewolf film from 1981 is not only a horror film, but it manages to mix and symbolize political thriller with Native American folklore. Wolfen is definitely a smart horror fiilm that has characters and audience members thinking.

What is interesting the way the film set up and the way it develops as it goes on. It never tries to go over the top with silliness or special effects from lyncanthrope, but it does have a lot of gore.

The film takes some time to get into, but once you are pass that, you are solid. Performances are well done especially from Albert Finney and anyone that is around him. The dialogue is intellectual, serious, and humorous.

Wolfen is definitely a great werewolf film along with its contemporary rivals An American Werewolf in London (comedy) and The Howling (satire/culture). Director and co-writer Michael Wadleigh wanted to bring more into the table and he suceeded.

I will have to think a little bit more about this film to get it if the ending was not the thesis afterall.
