Review of Wizards (1977) by Coop L — 27 Feb 2008
One of the greatest cartoons ever dropped. Bakshi is a hero of mine and he knows how to soul up the screen. Wizards, a low-buget project, still is a centerpiece and pinnacle of creative depth and boundaries one can accomplish in cinematic cartoons, particularly for the 70s.
Done on cell animation, employing the use of rotoscoping and multiple other styles and innovations in that medium. The change in styles and atmospheres, presented in the trippy surrealistic post-apocalytic fasion that Wizards is in, creates this constant shift in mood and emotion.
A great piece that transcends the boundaries of that genre and becomes something much more. Granted, the film was very cheap and it is evident, but this got Bakshi's foot in the door for much bigger grander pieces, like Lord of the Rings, which he did the next year, in 1978.
