Review of Wit (2001) by Angie M — 11 Aug 2009
You know a movie is great when its use of "wit" does not in any way fluff up the difficult and morbid subject matter. Evoking the sadness through the delivery of the funny - a huge credit goes to Emma Thompson.
One of the best female performances I have seen. You laugh at her remarks, you cry for her isolation, you are angry at the way she is treated. The actress is simply superb. Have to commend the supporting performances, though.
Eileen Atkins, of course, leaves a mark in her brief appearance, partly because she reads so well! Jonathan Woodward is just perfect as the cocky know-it-all, as is Audra McDonald who counters him as the sensitive and sympathetic nurse.
