Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Mloy X — 30 Dec 2013
Megan (Casey MacLaren): What are we ever gonna do with you, baby girl?
Ree (Jennifer Lawrence): Kill me I guess.
Megan (Casey MacLaren): That idea's been said already. Got any others?
Ree (Jennifer Lawrence): Help me. Nobody's said that idea yet, have they?
A strange kind of avant-garde, artsy film. It seemed like nothing really happened and at the same time everything happened all at once. The film had the feel of a dog chasing its tail-- it starts at one point and by the end of the film, it circles back around and ends at the very same point; it's just so odd. It is also unapologetic and a little uncomfortably, dirty-gritty, where you just want to take a shower afterwards because it feels like you hung around people who haven't bathe in years and it feels like their stench would somehow infect you through the screen kind of filthy feel to it. There's such an overwhelming feeling of emptiness and despair in this movie that you can't help but root for the protagonist to succeed somehow, just to feel an ounce of joy in what seems to be a depressing and pointless existence. That's what makes this film interesting to watch, for its uniqueness. I'll give it that, I can say, I've never seen anything like it and I guess that's what made it so fascinating because watching the characters in this film was like watching an alien civilization, with just a hint of the familiar to pique your curiosity and yet different enough to feel foreign and detached-- like watching a freak-show. This movie was just a bit weird.
