Review of Winter's Bone (2010) by Daniel V — 10 Aug 2014
Winter's Bone reminds me of Boyz N Da Hood. Now before you scoff, watch it and you may come to the same assumption. Like Boyz, the characters in this story are victims of their environment and the only life they know is one that most would pity.
That's not what these people want from you. In fact they don't want anything from you. This is a part of America, like South Central LA or Compton, that people feel more comfortable thinking only exist in the realms of entertainment.
But they do exist. But it isn't all despair, there is hope. And though both Boyz and Winter end on what seems a dreary note, if you are paying attention there is hope there. People can escape their fate or at the very least make the best life they can with it.
Jennifer Lawrence is amazing and never once did I believe Ree wasn't going to make it. Lawrence has a strength that is almost tangible, it touches you as few actors can. She will be around for a long long time.
