Review of Winter Light (1963) by F M — 30 Aug 2007
While the English title of this film is very fitting and the cinematography really shows the harsh, crispness of the winter light, the Swedish title translated fits very well, too: "The Communicants," meaning both those who take communion and those who communicate among themselves.
The irony and tragedy of the film is that none of them actually are able to do this. The second in Bergman's trilogy on faith, "Winter Light" is a stark picture that takes place mostly within the confines of the church.
Of the three films, it obviously deals with faith and doubt in a higher being most directly. The relationship between the pastor and his "ex-lover," the schoolteacher is where the brunt of the film lies.
A film, like the other two in the series, that could lead to some excellent discussions on faith and doubt in a small group setting.
