Review of Winter Light (1963) by Jeremiah M — 19 Dec 2007
Bergman's great realist masterpiece is possibly his hardest film to watch, and with good reason. Bergman uses a condensed time setting to examine an extraordinary day in an ordinary life. Every line sounds like real speech, every shot is deliberately subtle.
The film manages to be at once stripped of artifice and deeply symbolic. Bergman considered it one of his three best films. If he had only made three great films, this would probably be one of them, but thankfully, he made many.
