Review of Winter Light (1963) by Hunter S — 04 Apr 2011
By virtue of the subject matter, this is of course quite a bit more overtly religiously-oriented than Through a Glass Darkly. Still very bleak and sparse.
I feel that the ending could be taken as either ironic (how I originally interpreted it) or hopeful. I suspect Bergman wrote it with the former in mind, but one could just as easily see it as a bold declaration of a truth that transcends the events of the film.
