Review of Winter Light (1963) by Michael K — 31 Dec 2007
Absolutely brilliant. Bergman himself said this was the one movie in which everything happened exactly the way he wanted it to happen. Seemingly less ambitious than, say, The Seventh Seal or Cries and Whispers, it has a great deal to say about faith and what happens when it is in crisis.
And hey, writing about this movie got me into NYU's School of Cinema Studies, so of course I'm a little biased. Maybe not the best introduction to Bergman, but essential nonetheless.
