Review of Winter Light (1963) by Corey W — 28 Jul 2011
This is my favorite Bergman. It's absolutely gripping. Von Sydow's character is a perfect exercise in fear and sadness, and Bjornstrand is possibly better here than anywhere else. His performance is absolutely riveting.
Every facial expression, word, and voice tone expresses his uncertainty and inability to console Sydow, who came to him for help. I was glued to the screen, in shock, silent and contemplative the entire film.
Great place to start for the Bergman-naive, and a classic for Bergman fans. Great film.
