Review of Winter Light (1963) by John W — 02 Sep 2008
Bergman is a genius... its that simple. He has the great ability of taking normal everyday characters in normal every day events and tell a moving story (though I know some of his films aren't always normal).
He digs right into the raw emotions of people, questioning God, life, love and death. This story centers around a priest named Tomas. With the death of his wife years ago hes become more and more detached from people and his faith.
On this day, all of it is tested as a school teachers Marta desperately tries to have Tomas accept her love. Ingrid Thulin's performance as Marta is on of the best I have ever seen. Every moment she pours out emotion.
She isn't Katie Holmes or Angelina Jolie and thats what I love. She is so natural and so honest it makes the performance all the more moving. Not only is the acting wonderful, but the cinematography as well.
It doesn't go over the top. It just keeps it natural as if it were one of our areas. The film is so honest true and simple that its one of the biggest movies Ive ever seen.
