Review of Winter Light (1963) by Art S — 21 Sep 2011
Clocking in at just 80 minutes, the middle film in Bergman's so-called "Silence of God" trilogy really packs a punch. Focused on a priest who has lost his faith (which seemingly has real repercussions for his community) this is beautifully shot in chilly black and white by Sven Nyvist.
The scene at the river edge is so stark and naturalistic (in all of its horror) that you can feel the self-loathing through the screen. As bleak as the title would suggest, but is it hope or a failure to know what else to do that motivates the final scene?
