Review of Windtalkers (2002) by Brian H — 13 May 2008
It did not start off well; very uninspiring and generic as far as war movies go. I always hate it when we're pushed right into a combat scene where it's complete chaos and we have no kind of stated objective presented.
It's all just flying bodies at that point. This feeling of "generic war movie" continues through the first half of the film; I've seen this all before and I'm losing interest quick.
Basically the character development takes a long time, but it does occur. Once we get onto Saipan things get clicking; the combat scenes become objective based, the characters become dynamic, and the film is much more engaging.
In those respects, the movie saves itself. I would have wished it would have been more accurate to WWII; I don't need to see a Rambo impression by Nick Cage. Otherwise it was a decent war film, but there are better ones out there.
