Review of Winchester (2018) by Mirza Mohd S — 10 Feb 2018
Better than I expected after reading several reviews. A good ghost story you can take the kids to see without the fear of scarring then for life with a bunch of gratuitous gore and guts. The mansion is beautifully rendered, and as an antiques enthusiast, I couldn't stop looking everywhere.
The story works in the context of the film, but I'm surprised that no other reviewer has pointed out the one glaring flaw of the plot. The Winchester repeating rifle was invented in 1866. The Civil War ended in 1865.
You do the math, the story's premise is completely impossible. Notwithstanding, for those who are oblivious to history, or are too lazy to look things up on Wikipedia, this detail will go unnoticed.
I think the strong dislike for this film in other reviews stems mostly from a desire to see more violence, gore, insanity, and, well, horror, especially since the movie is classified as such. But, slasher flick this ain't, and you'll have to be satisfied by some jump scares and squeaky doors instead.
Personally, I hate horror films, and went to this one only because my wife wanted to see a scary movie. Every time we do though, she leaves the theatre truly horrified, regretting she went. Well, that's why they call them horror movies.
We were pleasantly surprised to watch a suspenseful ghost story instead of the typical satanic, twisted, everyone dies a gruesome death nightmare that Hollywood typically puts out. The actors did not disappoint, in my opinion, and the film was visually stunning.
