Review of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) by Mark F — 30 Dec 2015
I've seen this movie so many times but it's only just struck me what a piece of work Grandpa Joe is! He lies in bed for 20 years refusing to work while the family are in poverty and then as soon as he catches wind of a trip to the chocolate factory he's up and doing a conga around the room. Clearly a lazy benefits cheat. Inside the factory, he then steals some pop and tells Charlie to do the same, nearly killing the pair of them in the process on the roof fan. And then finally, when Wonka calls him out on it, he storms off in a huff threatening to sell the secret of the everlasting gobstopper to Slugworth. The guy's a mongrel.
Apart from Grandpa Joe though, this movie is a classic. Forget the newer version with Johnny Depp, this is the one you want to see.
