Review of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) by Mathlover9000 — 01 Mar 2018

This film is good, but it is no Star Wars or Jaws. It is far from perfection. Let's talk about the positives. I really like Charlie's character development. The characters I loved in the film were Charlie and his grandfather, and of course, Willy Wonka.

The storytelling was great in this movie. There were several great emotional scenes of tears and joy. Most of the jokes landed in this film. Last but not least, the film has a great message for kids about the dangers of selfishness and the rewards of good character.

Unfortunately, because of the negatives I'm about to list, it killed this film's shot of being a masterpiece. A couple side characters were extremely unlikable in this movie. Veruca Salt is extremely annoying in this movie.

Her acting like a brat and complaining throughout the film was not funny but cringeworthy and painful for the eyes and ears. Veruca is up there with the most annoying characters I've seen in a movie. Though Violet was no where close to as bad as Veruca, she was still an annoying brat nevertheless.

Thank God they were punished for there unlikable behavior, but I shouldn't be wishing for bad things to happen to the characters. The film could have presented these two as annoying to the characters in the film but funny to the audience.

These characters were just annoying to the audience. Also, this film got way too cheesy with the singing. Though a few songs were excellent in this film, a lot of them were just out of place and corny.

In the end, Willy Wonka is an excellent film for kids but only an above average film for adults. This film could've been at least a 9/10 if it weren't were the two annoying side characters and the over-the-top cheesiness.

I like the film but I didn't love this film. I give this film a 7/10.
