Review of Wild Zero (1999) by Brian C — 30 Nov 2009
A Japanese film about aliens raising the dead as bloodthirsty zombies, and the worlds only hope of salvation a punk-styled three piece rock band called guitar wolf - who believe that rock and roll knows no racial or gender boundaries ? Count me in. Wild Zero is a certifiably insane movie by music video director Tetsuro Takeuchi that cheerfully ignores conventions of the zombie movie genre and makes only a cursory nod to reality in the process. And it's bloody brilliant; bloody being the operative word here as, despite all of it's inspired madness, this film does not scrimp on the gore.
If you like Shaun of the Dead, then you will like this. In fact I will go one step further and say that this is a better film than Shaun of the Dead because it is not as self knowing - but is more outrageous and adventurous. And Guitar Wolf are very cool indeed: Witness the guitarist/lead singer (also called Guitar Wolf) despatch three undead with one shot from his .44 magnum - and they are not even standing in a straight line! If you will want to watch a movie that will leave you with a silly grin on your face and a desire to punch the air and shout "rock and roll!", you should be watching this.
