Review of Wild Strawberries (2012) by Michael H — 10 Apr 2010
A rich, fully deserved masterpiece that ranks up there with the best that world cinema has to offer. It is a fully realized story of an elderly man who begins to be haunted by dreams, both scary and bittersweet, that force him to reexamine his life and the relationships that he cultivated.
The journey he takes, both literally to get his honorary degree and the metaphorical journey of his soul, is quiet, serene, and always breathtaking. Fine acting, impeccable staging and beautiful filmmaking define the first of Bergman's (for me) two definitive masterpieces, which makes his later films all the more frustrating due to their ambitious emptiness.
Yet this one is absolutely perfect.
