Bergman is a master at capturing the complexities, ambiguities, and brilliance of the human mind. However, he is humble enough not to elevate humanity to the point where the presence of God is lost in a selfish splendor.

The old man, who is the 'hero' of the story, is captured at a crucial and profound point in his existential journey, and Bergman keeps the right amount of distance from the character so that we, the viewers, do not find ourselves completely sympathetic, satisfied, or resolved in the story being told for us.

There is a certain intellectual interest that must be drawn upon, and this action will allow us to more fully experience the mysterious diversity of this, and all other Bergman works. Four stars.
