As a tale of a woman trekking the Pacific Crest Trail this a fine film. But combine it with her back story and it is so much more. Reese Witherspoon is just great in portraying the true story of Cheryl Strayed who hiked the West Coast in the 90s to test herself and find herself.
It's a very nuanced film, smartly weaving in her back story to give substance to her story. She is a broken women who has encountered bad luck and also delivered plenty of destruction herself. This finely directed film manages very skilfully to combine natural beauty, personal struggle and poetic thoughts with great skin.
