Review of Wild (2014) by Joe H — 30 Jan 2015
We should all be so brave as to walk away when we need to. Cheryl Strayed had every reason to walk away, so she did. Literally. This beautifully shot film manages to tell a story of love, of loss, of salvation in a fresh and honest way. Director Jean-Marc Vallée never tells you how to feel which is ultimately the films greatest strength. We don't need to know where the story is taking us in order to go along -- that is the essence of Strayed's journey. Her story is the purest example of the journey being the destination.
Reese Witherspoon's raw, unapologetic performance is a blistering reminder of her dynamic voice as an actor, and her ability to take us with her into the wild.
