Review of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) by Jovan J — 20 Mar 2011
I had always envisioned Liz Taylor as some extravagant person with diamonds and wine, never saw any of her films, so I didn't really know anything about her fame. This movie blew my preconceved notions about her out the window.
This was pretty raw, in a white, upper-middle class sort of way, but still. Great performances by all the stars, the dialogue is rich and dense, but doesn't seem too pretentious. Intense emotional scenes constantly kept me guessing when someone was going to be killed.
It kinda got a bit slowish to me by the end, or maybe it was because they really were just arguing and sparring the entire time, but they did it a good job of coming up with new ways to make them mean.
I really wanted to know what was a t the heart of their love/hate relationship, but to find out it was all a twisted S&M game was...something unexpected, didn't really fulfill me as a viewer that much.
This also reminded me of Revolutionary Road, but muuuuuuch better, see where they got that inspiration from.
