Review of Whiteout (2009) by Paul G — 02 Dec 2010
I am genuinely mystified by why the RT meter shows such a low rating for this film. FRANKLY I was eager to see it when the movie came out. But I allowed the meter to deceive me.
Having watched the movie on HBO/Cinemax I am confounded as to why people think this movie was not good when the truth is it was actually quite good.
There is a little freaky thing going on with RT meter. Throughout the years, you have to disregard everytime it gives a really low meter reading or a really high one.
Take BORAT for instance. It believe the meter was off the charts. I frankly thought the humor was crass in in horrible taste. Yet the meter said its fabulous. It wasnt.
Throughout the years I have noticed this profound irony with the meter and basically you toss out the rating system any time a movie scores below 10% and above 90%.
Have you ever been to a gourmet restaurant that is really highly rated off the charts?? Then you go home and wonder WTF was it that you just ate? Raters and Reviewers have come to have abnormal taste because they taste movies/food far more often than the average person.
This film did not deserve such a low rating, just as Borat did not deserve such a high rating. Its a freak little thing. The meter is off from time to time.
Having said that I would say Whiteout was actually quite nice. I enjoyed it. Kate was in top form and I believe this is one of her best films to date.
Take a look at the movie commentaries on Citizen Kane when it first came out. Or the popularity of Blade Runner.
This was a well made film. Acting also was quite good.
And I am truly baffled by the meter.
