Review of White Oleander (2002) by Jaime T — 23 Jun 2008
When this film first came out I payed it no mind and fobbed it off as a "Chick Flick". How wrong I was!
I happened to catch it on TV late one night, as I do with all great films, and couldn't take my eyes off the screen. This film had me entranced. It is a very powerful film and it gave me a mixed bag of feelings. Sadness, hope, joy, anger, embarassment...even made me notice some of the things about myself, that I might not have liked, are not so bad!
This is just a great and engaging story about a strong girl who is dealt all the wrong hands in life. She manages to make them work for her, in her own special, if not odd, way.
I love what this film sets across to the viewer. No matter that this girl had awful experiances in life, was unhappy and lost people that she loved, she would not be the girl she has become if not for those experiances and traumas. She has learned from life and has become someone who can see the world and people for who and what they truely are. She is better for everything she has suffered.
