Review of White Christmas (1954) by Charlie P — 29 Mar 2018
Bob Wallace (Bing Crosby) and Phil Davis (Danny Kaye) enjoy a life of showbiz after leaving the army. However years later, they learn that their former General, Waverly (Dean Jagger) is suffering from severe financial problems with his beloved country inn. Now, with the help of Betty (Rosemary Clooney) and Judy Haynes (Vera-Ellen) two performing sisters, Bob and Phil plan to put on a major show that will not only save the inn, but will finally give their beloved general the respect he deserves...
White Christmas may be incredibly cheesy and predictable at times, but as with most examples of musical films produced in the 1950's, the production design and the dance choreography is just so amazing that almost no one will care.
Both Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye give really funny performances, with the latter's romantic subplot with Judy being surprisingly well-written and sweet compared to most romances at the time.
Overall, White Christmas deserves it's status as a holiday classic, despite the fact that the Christmas elements in this film feel like a bit of an afterthought, when compared to other Christmas films.
