Review of White Christmas (1954) by Matthew D — 16 Dec 2018
A pleasant winter time classic.
White Christmas (1954) is delightful from Michael Curtiz' clever direction and long panning sequences, creative choreography, cute romance story, Irving Berlin's lovely music, and the great acting talents of the cast. White Christmas holds up dearly and is actually better than I remembered as a child.
Bing Crosby is a great straight man as the lead. His booming deep voice still resonates with me today and his charming take on the grumpy older man is just great. Danny Kaye's dancing is phenomenal and so varied. His voice is nice, but his comedic chops and timing is really something special to behold.
The leading ladies are great complements to the men in White Christmas. Rosemary Clooney is gorgeous and a fantastic fluid dancer. She is so funny and quick witted with her jokes. Her voice is nice, but Vera-Ellen's voice is gorgeous. She plays it nice, but is very charming herself. She is a great foil for Crosby.
White Christmas is filled with memorable songs, especially the title track, but the real fun is the dynamic between Crosby and Kaye. They are the magic to this holiday joyful film.
