Review of When Harry Met Sally... (1989) by Tommy D — 13 Sep 2011
The Eagles Hotel California, Dark Side of the Moon by Floyd, the '69 Mets, USA Hockey Team in '80, Maui at Sunset, the day my son was born and every day since, some things just don't have any flaws, for romantic comedies it's "When Harry Met Sally".
The lead characters are people we love not in spite of their flaws, but because of them. Sally is beautiful with a Tomboyish charm no other woman in cinema has matched. She's quirky, a bit overbearing, often dresses like she tried to see how many pieces of clothing she could don in 10 minutes, for these and a hundred other nuances, we fell in love with her.
Harry is any man, hiding his tender side with an almost cavalier wrecklessness about him and when that failed him he leaned on wit. Towards the end we see a man that every man secretly wishes he could be, a slave to the kind of love we could all have if we only abandoned pride and fear.
When I need to remember the possibilities, when life is unkind and I can't recall my inner "Harry", I pop in the DVD. It's the only film besides Casablanca I think I've seen over 100 times.
.when I saw the rating of 91%, all I could think of was "9% of the reviewers will never know true love". It's got great comedy, pure romance, wonderfully cast role players, even the directors mom and her one line was brilliant.
Need to remember what is best in all of us, watch When Harry Met Sally one more time.
