Review of When a Stranger Calls (2006) by Matthew D — 04 Mar 2018
An unintentionally hilarious remake that ruins every ounce of suspense it had going for it. It doesn't even come close to the frightening opening sequence of the 1979 original. The acting is atrocious, the direction is flat and uninspired, and the plot is nonsensical. Every moment that attempts to play up suspense is overplayed to a point of annoyance. Loud, overexaggerated music and fake scares are what plague this film, and there is an abundance of those moments. There is never any time to breathe. Sometimes the best form of horror can be found with the pure silence, something this movie can't seem to muster.
1/5 stars.
