Review of What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) by Leighton T — 10 Apr 2011
A laid back gem. The acting is pinpoint accurate especially DiCaprio who is better in this film than any other. It physically hurts me to watch him. Depp plays the responsible, but disillusioned young man to perfection. The rest of the supporting characters surround them nicely really making it very much an ensemble effort. While the book is usually always better, both versions of the same story are very good.
Once it finishes, it seems like one of the movies that you can pass by because its themes are buried so deep. The thing is, it sticks with you. It's probably because, at some point, we've all felt the way Gilbert does.
