Review of What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015) by Melica N — 03 Jul 2015
Amazing. I love Nina Simone even more now. The learn so much about her and her life. It was interesting finding out that he had a mental health disorder, was denied entrance into the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, and that she changed her name to Nina Simone.
This movie was so inspiring that I started to write a poem about her. Here it goes: To be young, gifted, and black. Mind's tribulations. Not wanting to be misunderstood. Love her, leave her, or let her be lonely.
Nina's depression deteriorated her slowly. Entrance into Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia denied. Because of a color that she just could not hide. Pain bellowed inside of her mind. Mental health was the issue.
A diagnosis, not at the time. Sweet little Eunice. Wherefore art thou so sad? Did success not pull up to your drive way. And place you in the driver's seat? Did love not bruise and batter your soul.
Did children not enter your womb. And produce a healthy baby girl. Maybe it was the fact of being misunderstood. Understood on the stage. But forgotten in the crowd. I say. Live on Nina through your beautiful music that continues to play even after your death in 2003.
Live on Nina.
