Review of What Happened, Miss Simone? (2015) by Jaque H — 23 Jul 2016
A great and moving documentary on the life of an incredible jazz singer and pianist and civil rights activist. The doco interviews Nina's close friends and admirers as well as her only daughter and her despicable ex-husband.
It does a great job at showing what might have influenced her intriguing personality and mental health condition: racism, financial hardship, domestic violence and frustration for seeing her dream of becoming the first black female classical pianist slipping through her fingers as she becomes a jazz icon to only see her reputation and fame to fade later due to her political engagement.
