Review of Were the World Mine (2008) by Nema P — 10 Aug 2009
What happens when you combine a gay teen, a homophobic town and a magical love potion? If you said musical, you are correct!
There are so many things about this movie I loved. If not the adorable Tanner Cohen and his portrayal of outcast Timothy, a gay teen growing up in a small town, then also the intertwining of The Bard's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' (my favorite Shakespeare play). Timothy's mystical high school drama teacher, his refuge throughout the film, pushes the school to perform the play against the wishes of officials and his gym coach. Timothy is hesitant at first to get involved, but when he does, he unlocks a potion that not only changes his world but the world of all those in the town.
It's sweet and the music is charming. At some points the movie makes me wonder if the homophobia is exaggerated; I also would have liked to see more of Timothy's love interest. But anything that is able to combine Shakespeare and a gay love story deserves to be seen.
