Review of Welcome to Me (2015) by Amanda C — 30 Jun 2015
Welcome to Me is an unlikely comedy, riding on the talents of the fearless Kristin Wiig. It's not laugh out loud funny, but Welcome to Me is vastly entertaining. It take the difficult subject of mental illness and treats it with care and empathy.
We don't exactly laugh with Alice as she uses her lottery windfall to make a talk show all about her, but we don't laugh at Alice either. Director Shira Piven walks the narrow line between making a film that comments on mental illness and how it effects people, both those who suffer from it and those around them, and on the larger epidemic of narcissism.
Alice has borderline personality disorder. What's the reason for the rest of our obsessions?
