Review of Fran (1985) by Nicki M — 20 Aug 2012
Noni Hazelhurst plays Fran, an attractive single mum of three kids in her early 30's. Fran grew up in foster homes and has such low self esteem she can't be complete without a man. She is also paranoid about welfare spying on her.
It's actually quite sad as you can see Fran does care for her kids, she just isn't mature enough to look after them properly. Instead, she goes out looking for men, not feeding the kids properly and even takes off for over 4 weeks, dumping her kids off an a foster sister.
Things come to a head when her eldest daughter, Lisa, speaks out about Fran's current boyfriend and something terrible he did to her. Lisa is taken away from Fran and put into care, just like Fran herself years before.
Older movie, very well done with a convincing performance from Noni. Realistically show the cycle and consequences of a bad upbringing. Fran is as much a victim as her kids and the final scene shows Lisa peering in the mirror as if also trying to find her own self worth there.
