Review of Welcome to Marwen (2018) by Karen E — 02 Jan 2019
I liked this movie and don't understand the negative criticism. It's not a documentary - someone already made one of those so if that's what you are looking for, see Marwencol the documentary.
This movie serves a different purpose. It's very creative and requires the use of imagination and I really enjoyed the view into the fictional fantasy of Marwen as seen thru Hogencamp's point of view via the dolls and his creation of Marwen.
I think all the actors did a great job. I would have liked to see more of the real characters that the dolls are based on - especially Julie (Janell Monae). I think Steve Carell did a very good job in this role and the criticism is way out of line.
I cared very much about this man and yes, I wanted to know more about his life previous to Marwen and about the attack - but again, this was not a documentary so I read up on the real story to satisfy my curiosity and I plan on viewing the documentary to follow up.
This movie is an artistic expression and commentary on both the true story and the art that Mr. Hogencamp created and I was completely engaged. To each his own I supposed but I liked this movie very much.
