Review of We Are Marshall (2006) by Seth S — 14 Jul 2012
This is one of the best football movies I have seen. Which is sad, because this movie isn't great. It does focus on football more than your average, feel good, sports drama. And it doesn't have a ridiculous climax that is completely unbelievable.
The story is of Marshall University. In a tragic plane crash, all of the schools football team dies. The school hires coach Jack Lengyel to rebuild the football program. So with the help of assistant coach Red Dawson, Jack recruits and rebuilds the Marshall football program.
Matthew McConaughey gives a very good, sometimes quirky performance as Jack Lengyel. Not his usual, but that's o.k. Matthew Fox plays Red, the assistant coach. He turns in the best performance, as a man crippled with grief. Anthony Mackie plays one of the football players and brings a lot of emotion to the part.
Overall, this movie isn't fantastic by any means. But it does have some very good pieces that never quite come together. It's still better than almost all football movies though.
"One day, not today, not tomorrow, not this season, probably not next season either but one day, you and I are gonna wake up and suddenly we're gonna be like every other team in every other sport where winning is everything and nothing else matters. And when that day comes, well thats, thats when we'll honor them." 6.5/10.
