Review of W.E. (2011) by Matt A — 06 Jun 2012
Mention that Madonna is behind anything and you always get people willing to slate it no matter what she does, she simply cannot win. Forget that it is a Madonna film and you may enjoy it. For the forst 30 minutes I was contemplating turning it off as it wasn't moving fast enough for my liking, maybe cutting out at least 15 minutes and making a lot better editing choices would've worked in its favour.
It would've been a lot better as a period drama and not have the intertwining stories of the present mixed in with the past as there are a lot of things that are missed, you never get a sense of what attributes Wallis Simpson had to make the King fall in love with her.
Of course it isn't perfect and as it's done by a first time director maybe this is a lesson learned at what can be improved. Pacing and a few scripting issues aside, I actually enjoyed this, there are a few acting niggles in a few scenes but I thought it was a job well done, maybe going by an alias for her next film may shut the critics up.
