Review of Water Lilies (2007) by Mike M — 17 Apr 2008
The personalities of the young performers carry it through: if Haenel's the glamour girl whose swimsuited form was always going to be the poster image, Blachere proves to be a natural comedienne, funny and sad at the same time, and Acquart makes her sulkiness engaging in a way that recalls the young Charlotte Gainsbourg.
For teenage girls, it could well quality as reassuring viewing, a peek into restricted areas that suggests they're not alone in what they're going through; for everyone else, this is a brief but vivid reminder - one you may not want, or need - of just how horribly painful and unfair a process growing up can be.
