Review of Water Lilies (2007) by Pj P — 12 Jun 2010
An artfully made, modest first film by a young director. hopelessly derivative if you've seen Show Me Love and Fat Girl. Lacking the former's winsome tenderness and the latter's potent, fully realized sense of rage and chaos, Water Lilies is just kind of an unpleasant though visually beautiful and impressively acted and directed movie about an unpleasant period of pubescence.
Sciamma has potential as a director so long as she tackles a more substantive narrative and doesn't settle for surface emotion.
