Review of Warm Bodies (2013) by Kai82 — 26 Nov 2021
An entertaining Zombie movie with a unique idea. I often heard a description “Twilight with Zombies” for this movie. I will correct this as it is a far better movie. It has a good story, characters you care for, like I said unique ideas, creativity, humor and a great conclusion.
The movie is set a few years after a zombie apocalypse where humanity lost and the survivors struggle to stay alive. The refreshing part is that the protagonist R is a zombie and you see the world from his perspective.
He is wandering around wondering about his past he cant remember and thinks his name was something with the letter R. Zombies want to eat human brains just because they feel alive again through the emotions, memories and experiences from the person they eat.
When R and some fellow Zombies are hunting for food they encounter a group of humans. R is strangely attracted to Julie a member of the group and even his heart made one beat. A fight starts between the humans and zombies.
R kills Julies boyfriend before he could do it in reverse and eats his brain. He experience his feelings and saves Julie from the other zombies. This is the start of the story. Like I said it was refreshing, a bit crazy, creative and something new in the genre of zombie movies.
It should be silly but works well. To be fair it is maybe still a bit silly but the good kind. The story works from beginning to end and the conclusion feels great too. Be warned it is one of the movies I can see others hating with passion for the same reasons I (and others) like it.
It works also because of the actors. Lets start with the protagonist R played by Nicholas Hoult. I praise him for this performance and say it would be easy to become a laughing stock in this role but he impressed me with his performance.
Then we have Teresa Palmer as the female main role Julie. She also delivers a good performance and together they work well. For the side roles I praise Rob Coddry as M who is Rs zombie friend and of cause John Malkovich as Colonel Girogio.
The cast is a key ingredient into selling the unique approach and did everything nice. Then we have the visuals and I say they did everything right to deliver the atmosphere of zombies and zombie apocalypse.
I do not remember the score so I assume it was good in a sneakingly way (If it were bad or unfitting I would have recognized it to make another assumption). The humor and of cause the zombie perspective are a selling point of the movie.
Overall this was refreshing and entertaining. Might not end in my top 10 movies but was creative enough to recomend it to my friends.
