Sure, a teen with a TRS-80, a 12 kbps phone modem, and about 2 MB of RAM can commandeer the nation's nuclear defense system. Computers being the mysterious scary tools of terror that they were back then, people would've believed that you could use one to divert the orbital path of Venus to send it on a collision course with Earth too.
