Review of Walking on Sunshine (2014) by Sue R — 28 Jun 2014
'Walking on sunshine', a musical that solely attracted us knowing that the locations were all shot in Salento the deepest area of the South east of Italy (practically where we grew up) and set to the music of popular hit songs from the 1980s.
A part from being able to perfectly recognize every single location, nothing was expected.
Nonetheless with much astonishment we have to say the movie ended up being entering and very much appreciated.
The actors did a very good job, keeping up the fun light attitude of the movie with a very much spontaneous and playful performance. Very well sustained where the very well acted out dramatic moments (especially from the lovely lead Hannah Arterton) that at times empowered the scenes.
The singing and dancing are orchestrated in a simple and effective way, fitting those 'random' moments perfectly to the beautiful summer backdrop of Southern Italy.
'Walking on sunshine' is essentially a summer-romance-musical, nothing too new in the plot. Clichés and cheesiness transpires all over. After all it is the 80s and very much part of this movie's genre.
However what makes the movie fresh is the way the actors have kept a certain subtlety in their performance (a nice job surprisingly well carried out by the two 'bellis' Italian actors) in a movie that is engagingly fun and never too deep.
'Walking on sunshine' is a lovely ad on for the lovers of 80s music, musicals and summer-love-romance.
