Review of Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price (2005) by John R — 09 Jun 2011
I worked for a regional supermarket chain that used a lot of the same business strategies as Walmart. Short-staffing, no payed overtime, anti-union brainwashing, etc. These tactics are hardly unique to Walmart, as the documentary at least seems to imply. Yet, I also understand the criticisms. Walmart is the world's largest corporation. Think about that. With that kind of power Walmart has the ability to single-handedly change local, national, and even international economies (as shown in the film). With that kind of power and influence they also have the ability to enact positive change in their communities. Yet this documentary shows their continued misuse of that power, instead showing outrageous levels of corruption, greed, exploitation, and deceit. With great power comes great responsibility? Yeah, well with so much shunned responsibility Walmart deserves every bit of criticism they get.
Overall: A bit flawed, yes. But will I be stepping into a Walmart? No.
