Review of Waking Life (2001) by Amy A — 13 Mar 2009
An interesting, original and resolutely thought-provoking film. A guy trapped in a dream within a dream within a dream (incidentally one of the very first movie ideas I ever had--damn it, now it's been done) wanders about, meeting all sorts of people reflecting and sharing thoughts on life, death, dreams, communication, existence.
Some of those thoughts are eloquent and enlightening, others are more abstract and somewhat out of place--just like in a dream. The rotoscope animation is strange but very lively, and a delight to watch, kind of like a constantly moving painting.
Waking Life is a stimulating cinematic oddity that I recommend to all passionate thinkers out there.
