Review of Waking Life (2001) by David L — 01 Feb 2015
While I generally enjoy Linklater's work, I found this to be avoidably pretentious. The pedantic dialogue is only eclipsed by the cast of hipster walk-ons who crudely delivered lines above their reading level.
Only a few vignettes featured acting that lived up to the abstruse script, relying on the rotoscopic animation to keep your attention. I will give Richard credit for his ambition and creative artistry.
Without this film, he would never have delivered A Scanner Darkly, which I very much enjoyed.
