Review of Waking Life (2001) by Jared H — 27 Jan 2009
As a former student of philosophy, this movie caught my attention right away with the deep dialogue on existentialism, language and understanding, and the purpose of life. The animation grabs the attention as it shifts from clear, almost real images, to messy distorted perceptions.
The realization of dreaming, while interesting, was where I lost focus. Without a distinct plot to follow, there was little tying the latter half of the movie together. Perhaps I was looking for resolution, some sort of conclusion; but perhaps that is just it, we're all just floating in a perpetual state of simultaneously departing and arriving.
