Review of Wake in Fright (1971) by Huw G — 03 Aug 2010
It isn't 'horror' in the traditional sense, but "Wake in Fright" IS horrifying. I hated that town he was stuck in almost as much as the main character John Grant did. I hated it so much, I felt like I was stuck there with him! I'll probably never watch this movie again, but I can at least admit that "Wake in Fright" makes you feel like you are experiencing the awful things the main character experiences. The whole time I was watching "Wake in Fright" I just kept thinking, "Thank god I live in a city..." although I have nothing against our Aussie country towns, having been to a fair few.
When I say the town is awful, I don't mean that they're all psychopathic murderers or anything. No, that would be too much like your average horror movie. 'The Yabba' is just a boring, middle-of-nowhere town filled with brutish drunken men. Sounds harmless enough, but you watch this movie and see if you could survive in that fictional town for more than a couple of hours. I sure as hell couldn't.
