Review of Waiting for Guffman (1997) by Cory W — 23 Aug 2010
"Waiting for Guffman" is the first in the line of Christopher Guest's mockmuentaries, and it was a darn good one. The film centers around Corky St. Clair, a flamboyant theater director who assembles a rag-tag group of locals to put on a show for the town of Blaine's 150th anniversary.
The comedy in this definitely is an acquired taste. Since most of the lines in this are improvised, one must enjoy an alternative side of comedy that differs from most of the mainstream comedies these days.
Easily the best part of the movie is Guest, whose Corky charcter is one of the best comedic creations I've ever seen. Some of the lines in this are classic, and the last 30 minutes will leave you in stitches.
I don't believe this is one of the greatest comedies of all time as some insinuate, but this is a goofy comedy that is sure to please Guest fans, as well as those just looking for an off-beat fare.
Overall, "Waiting for Guffman" is screwball fun.
