Review of W. (2008) by Neil S — 23 Jun 2009
What struck me was Brolins' absolute dead on acting he does of George W. Bush... at times it seemed like a really good skit on Saturday night live... along with Thandie Newton as Condolezza Rice (more hilarity there!) and Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney.
The cover indicates that this would be a "fair" rundown of his character both good and bad, but I was convinced that the USA was run by a moron by the end. Skewed perhaps? Leave it to Oliver Stone to shed the light on his less attractive features: Drunk, aimless, weak.
.. yet he loves a woman who seems to have it all together (his only saving grace-- and he manages to get through with AA and his belief in God). With the structure flipping between the future and the past, one diverts the pivotal moment, which is HOW this (uneducated, bumbling) man ever made President?? Caused some heated conversation throughout and after the film was over.
.. so it gets extra points for that.
